Statement on Cancellation of
César Chávez March for Justice
We are deeply saddened and troubled by the serious accounts of abuse attributed to César Chávez during his leadership with the United Farm Workers. Allegations of sexual assault, abuse, and the silencing of victims are painful to hear and impossible to ignore. We want to be clear: harm of any kind must never be tolerated, no exceptions, no excuses, regardless of who is involved.
With heavy hearts and careful reflection, we have made the decision to cancel the 33rd annual commemorative event.
We recognize and sincerely honor the decades of work, care, and community commitment that have shaped this march. Precisely because of those values, we are choosing to move forward in a way that upholds the safety, dignity, and trust of our community.
This event has stood for something greater than any one individual. It has been a space rooted in community, in collective power, and in the ongoing pursuit of dignity, opportunity, and justice for working families. While inspired by a historic movement, our purpose has always been centered on the people, the voices, the resilience, and the shared commitment to progress.
We remain, now as always, a movement for the people and by the people. Our mission is to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and uplift the issues that impact our community most. That commitment does not end here - the struggle continues.
